When Your Heart is Broken, You Cry. A lot.

An excerpt from my upcoming book, The Wisdom of a Broken Heart, out in January, 2010. What do you think of these ideas about having a heart? You know I love hearing from you… And why not? After all, you’re YOU.

One way to think of all these tears is as a flood of love. Liberated from its object, love now flows freely, powerfully, mercilessly, as rain, as sorrow, and as longing. When your heart is broken, it is broken open and in some sense your limitations in love have been removed. All the love you had for a particular person is still there but instead of attaching to an object, it floats freely. It is groundless and without reference point. Through one lens, this is a supremely painful situation. It is. But through another, it is something else. I won’t say that this something else is pleasurable, but it is real. It is real and raw and very deep and even if you don’t want it to be this way (you’d rather your love had an object), it is. And now that you’re here, up to your neck with love unbound, you could try to do something with it. Because although it doesn’t feel good, it is very, very precious. In fact it is wild and deep and basically unmanageable. This is your heart. Freed of the containment of relationship, it roars. You didn’t know all this energy and intensity was in there to begin with. What you thought was a cute little kitty-cat you now see has been a ferocious mountain lion all along.

Susan, I am looking forward to reading your lovely book! I have recently experienced this ‘open heart’ feeling and it sure is raw, deep and wonderful! It’s definitely ‘new and surreal!’ I love how you described it as seeing life with a new lens! I surely feel this! ;) I believe we all have different necessary experiences which bring us to this place of emotional acceptance ~the bird flys! ;) we have wings! Much luv, Jenn

What in interesting way to look at the broken heart. I’m still working on accepting that my love has no object. It feels as though it still has an object (a person), but now the love is stronger, more needy, more flowing all over the place… getting itself on everything in its path.

Perhaps for me, it’s more like the love flows as heavily as it does right now so that I can get it out? When my heart is broken open, and all the love comes out… and gets all over everything… that just helps me let go of the desperate desire to focus it onto one person. So far, that’s not working very well, but I have learned from past heartbreak that it will… in time.

First, I cannot even wait for the book to come out, I love reading your insights. Second, taking the idea of a broken heart one step past love’s heartbreak into what I’m dealing with these days, I’m looking at my heartbreak as a way to find love in all of the pain. Thank you for that!

Hello Susan! I read ..”how not to be afraid of your life” in 2007 and have checked in on your work now and again. I took a whole week off in 2007 just to study your book and follow the meditation….it was extremely helpful to me. You’ve inspired me in my own writing and spiritual journey. Good luck with your new book, I’ll be sure to get a copy !
